Solomon Olamilekan Adeola Emerges APC Consensus Candidate for Ogun 2027 Governorship Race

Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, widely known as Yayi, has been adopted as the consensus governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 election in Ogun State.

The decision followed extensive consultations involving party elders, federal lawmakers, current and former governors, as well as the state leadership of the APC. The move effectively settles internal debates over the party’s direction and positions it for a unified campaign ahead of the polls.

Adeola, who currently represents Ogun West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, brings a wealth of legislative and administrative experience. A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, he previously served as senator for Lagos West between 2015 and 2023, after earlier stints as a two-term member of the House of Representatives for Alimosho Federal Constituency and a two-term lawmaker in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Party stakeholders cited his extensive legislative background, financial expertise, and broad political network across Ogun State as key reasons for his adoption. As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Adeola is regarded as one of the most influential APC lawmakers from the Southwest.

The consensus arrangement is aimed at preventing a potentially divisive primary election and fostering unity within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. Key stakeholders at the meeting included members of the Ogun APC Elders Council, the State Working Committee, representatives of Governor Dapo Abiodun, and leaders from Ogun Central, Ogun East, and Ogun West.

Under the agreement, other aspirants are expected to step down and support Adeola’s candidacy. A reconciliation committee has also been constituted to engage aggrieved interests and harmonize party structures across the state’s 20 local government areas.

Adeola’s emergence is seen as significant for Ogun West, a district that has long sought to produce the state governor since the creation of Ogun State in 1976. Supporters view his candidacy as a step toward achieving equitable power rotation among the state’s three senatorial zones.

Throughout his public service career, Adeola has championed initiatives in education, healthcare, road infrastructure, and youth empowerment. Since representing Ogun West, he has facilitated several constituency projects, leveraging his role in federal budget processes.

With the APC’s consensus now in place, attention is expected to shift toward voter mobilization, membership revalidation, and strategic policy messaging ahead of the official timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Meanwhile, opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have yet to announce their candidates.

In a statement issued by his media office, Adeola expressed gratitude to party leaders and stakeholders for their confidence in him. He pledged to prioritize unity within the APC and build a broad-based coalition across the state.

“Consensus is not an end, it is a call to work,” the statement read. “We will engage every ward, every group, and every stakeholder to deliver a government that works for all of Ogun State.”

Political analysts note that while the early consensus gives the APC a strategic advantage, its success will ultimately depend on effective internal coordination and a strong, inclusive campaign across Ogun State’s diverse political landscape.
