Coca-Cola’s FIFA W/Cup Campaign: “Bubbling Up”, “Uncanned Emotions”: The critique

Coca-Cola’s latest campaign for the FIFA World Cup is a perfect example of how the brand has always linked football to the emotions we all feel, rather than just the game itself. This campaign positions Coca-Cola as a true companion to the rollercoaster of emotions that football fans experience worldwide.

Strong emotional appeal: What really stands out in this campaign is its ability to tap into one of football’s greatest strengths: emotion. Instead of just showing players scoring goals or celebrating victories, the ads highlight the fans—their reactions, their anticipation, their anxiety, their joy, and their collective celebrations. This strategy makes the campaign resonate with a wider audience, reaching beyond just the die-hard football fans.

By weaving emotional storytelling into the mix, Coca-Cola feels more like a part of the experience rather than just a sponsor.

Reinforcement of brand heritage: Coca-Cola has been a part of FIFA for many years, and this campaign does a fantastic job of leveraging that rich history. The ads remind everyone that Coke has been there through countless World Cup moments, which only strengthens the trust and familiarity people have with the brand.

The campaign cleverly builds on the brand’s existing reputation rather than attempting to completely overhaul its connection to football.

When it comes to music, there’s no denying that the anthem “Jump,” featuring J Balvin, Amber Mark, Steve Vai, and Travis Barker, injects a modern, global vibe into the campaign while tapping into the nostalgia of a classic tune. This music brings a sense of excitement and energy that perfectly matches the lively spirit of football.

In terms of global appeal, the campaign steers clear of cultural biases by honing in on universal emotions. No matter if you’re a fan in Nigeria, Brazil, Mexico, England, or Japan, the feelings that come with supporting a team are something everyone can relate to.

Where the campaign falls short

Limited product focus: While the emotional storytelling is captivating, Coca-Cola sometimes takes a backseat. Viewers might remember the thrill, the music, and the football vibe, but the product itself can get lost in the mix. The emotional narrative often overshadows what Coca-Cola is really all about.

Familiar approach: Coca-Cola has been tapping into emotional storytelling around football for quite some time. While it works, this latest campaign doesn’t really bring anything radically new to the table compared to past World Cup efforts like “Wavin’ Flag” or “Colors.”

The campaign definitely pulls at the heartstrings, but it doesn’t break new ground.
