How Military Doctor, Lt. Samson Haruna Was Set Ablaze by Wife
The Nigerian military community is reeling from the tragic loss of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, a medical doctor and officer, who died after being allegedly set on fire by his wife, Retyit Dalong, in their residence at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Abak, Akwa Ibom State.

The horrific incident occurred barely six months after the couple’s wedding.

Lt. Haruna, originally from Benue State, was a dedicated military physician serving at the 6 Battalion Regimental Medical Unit. He had proudly joined the military after graduating from medical college to serve his fatherland. He married Retyit Dalong, a nurse, on April 21, 2025, with their wedding solemnized in her hometown of Jos.

The gruesome attack took place on the night of September 22, 2025. Sources allege that while Lt. Haruna was in a deep slumber, his wife doused the marital bed with petrol and ignited it. The ensuing inferno left the officer with grave burn injuries.

Lt. Haruna was initially treated at the barracks hospital before being urgently transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH). Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.

Military authorities have confirmed that Mrs. Retyit Haruna has been arrested in connection with the incident. A full investigation is currently underway to uncover the complete facts and circumstances surrounding the tragedy that claimed the life of the young military doctor.
