FENRAD Condemns New Tax Law as Wicked, Exploitative, Demands Immediate Suspension

The Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy & Development (FENRAD) has strongly condemned Nigeria’s newly introduced tax law, describing it as “wicked, exploitative and anti-people,” and calling for its immediate suspension.

In a press statement issued in Abuja on February 13, 2026, the civil society organization expressed deep concern over the timing and impact of the policy, arguing that it places additional burdens on Nigerians already struggling with economic hardship.

FENRAD stated that at a time when inflation remains high, unemployment persists, the naira faces volatility, and purchasing power continues to decline, introducing additional tax measures would further compound the suffering of ordinary citizens.

According to the organization, the new tax framework disproportionately affects low- and middle-income earners, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and marginalized communities.

The group described the policy as disconnected from economic realities, warning that rather than fostering inclusive growth and recovery, it risks widening inequality and eroding public trust in governance.

“As an environmental and social justice organization, we fault the present administration for failing to prioritize people-centered economic reforms,” the statement read.

FENRAD argued that fiscal policy should serve as a tool for social protection and national development, not as an instrument that deepens hardship during economic instability.

The organization emphasized that sustainable revenue generation cannot come at the expense of vulnerable populations. It urged the government to instead strengthen progressive taxation mechanisms that ensure high-income earners and large corporations meet their fair tax obligations.

FENRAD also called for urgent measures to plug revenue leakages and tackle corruption within public financial management systems.

Furthermore, the group demanded a transparent economic and social impact assessment of the new tax measures and broader consultation with civil society organizations, labor unions, business associations, and community stakeholders before full implementation.

The organization urged the National Assembly to exercise its constitutional oversight responsibility by reviewing the tax policy to ensure it aligns with principles of equity, fairness, and social justice.

“Economic reforms must be anchored in compassion, transparency, and inclusivity,” FENRAD stated, warning that any policy that disproportionately affects the poor undermines national cohesion and long-term development objectives.

The Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for economic justice, environmental sustainability, and accountable governance, while expressing readiness to engage constructively with policymakers to advance equitable reforms that protect the dignity and welfare of Nigerians.

The statement was signed by Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, Executive Director of the Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy & Development (FENRAD), Abuja.
