Federal Inland and Revenue service has now been reconstituted as the Nigeria Revenue service

Nigeria’s federal tax authority has entered a new phase in its evolution, formally adopting a new name and visual identity that reflects the government’s ongoing overhaul of the country’s revenue administration system.

The agency formerly known as the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has now been reconstituted as the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), following the enactment of a new legal framework that expands its mandate and redefines its role within the national economy

The transition was officially marked in Abuja this week with the unveiling of the NRS logo, an event that signalled both a symbolic and operational shift in how Nigeria manages federal revenue collection.

The rebranding follows the signing of the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Act, 2025, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which repealed the FIRS Act and created the NRS as the country’s central revenue authority. The legislation forms a core part of the administration’s broader tax reform agenda aimed at strengthening fiscal sustainability and improving government earnings.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman of the NRS, described the new identity as a reflection of the agency’s renewed focus on efficiency, integration and taxpayer service.

According to him, the transition underscores the commitment of the revenue authority to operate in line with international best practices while supporting Nigeria’s economic transformation objectives.

A symbol of deeper reform

Beyond the change of name, the newly unveiled logo was presented as a representation of institutional renewal. Officials explained that the design embodies continuity, enhanced capacity and a forward-looking approach to revenue administration, especially at a time when domestic revenue mobilisation has become critical to funding public infrastructure, social programmes and economic development initiatives.

Adedeji noted that the launch of the NRS brand marks the beginning of a more collaborative relationship between the tax authority and the public, anchored on transparency, accountability and mutual trust.

Aligned with sweeping tax changes

The emergence of the NRS coincides with the rollout of a comprehensive tax reform framework that took effect in 2026. The reforms are designed to simplify tax processes, broaden the tax base, modernise administrative systems and improve compliance across sectors.

Key elements of the new system include the use of the National Identification Number (NIN) as the Tax Identification Number (TIN) for individuals, while Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration numbers now serve as tax identifiers for companies. The integration is intended to reduce duplication and enhance data-driven tax administration.

Implications and outlook

Industry observers note that the transformation from FIRS to the NRS represents a strategic move toward a unified revenue authority with expanded responsibilities, aligning Nigeria with global trends in public finance management.

However, the reforms have also generated debate, attracting public scrutiny, legislative interest and legal challenges, highlighting the need for clear communication and stakeholder engagement as the new system takes room.

As the Nigeria Revenue Service begins operations under its new identity, expectations are high that it will deliver a more efficient, transparent and service-oriented revenue system capable of supporting Nigeria’s long-term development goals.

The unveiling of a new logo in Abuja may appear symbolic, but for taxpayers, businesses and policymakers, it marks the opening of a new chapter in Nigeria’s fiscal governance — one defined by reform, accountability and the pursuit of a modern revenue framework.
