Babcock University has launched a drone surveillance initiative in partnership with New Horizon as part of efforts to strengthen campus security while expanding learning opportunities in emerging technologies.

The initiative, unveiled on Tuesday at the New Horizon complex on the university’s main campus, extends surveillance coverage up to a 30-kilometre radius beyond the institution, providing enhanced security for students, staff and neighbouring communities.

Speaking at the launch, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Afolarin Ojewole, said the university remains committed not only to academic excellence but also to the safety and character development of its students.

“Babcock is not only concerned about academics, but about character and security. Whilst we are watching after our own, we are also looking out for those around our community so that together, we can have an ecosystem where you close your eyes when you go to bed at night,” he said.

Beyond its security benefits, the partnership is expected to deepen students’ exposure to cutting-edge technology. Prof. Ojewole disclosed that the university is considering introducing practical training in drone infrastructure and robotics into its academic programmes to equip students with industry-relevant skills.

He also announced plans by the university to procure two additional drones to expand surveillance coverage and improve emergency response capabilities across the campus and surrounding areas.

As part of the collaboration, New Horizon donated a high-performance surveillance drone and a monitoring screen to the university. Public Safety

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of New Horizon, Mr. Tim Akano, described the donation as another milestone in the organisations’ 22-year relationship.

“We are happy to donate this drone to BU to create another layer of security architecture. We have been part of your journey for the past 22 years and it’s been a win-win, and this is another layer to strengthen and cement our relationship permanently,” Akano said.

He noted that the drone is capable of flying up to 7,000 feet, delivering clear night-vision imagery and transmitting real-time visuals to support rapid security response. DefenseIndustry

Akano added that the partnership also covers training in drone operation, maintenance and repairs to ensure long-term sustainability while developing technical expertise among university personnel and students.

The launch attracted key stakeholders, including representatives of the Ilishan Police Force led by CSP Betty Ajuwon, members of the Ilishan Development Association and officials of Babcock University, reflecting a collaborative approach to strengthening security within and around the university community.

The initiative demonstrates how higher institutions can combine technology-driven security with practical learning, positioning students for careers in robotics, unmanned aerial systems and other emerging fields while contributing to safer learning environments.
