Kano/Jigawa Customs Receives First PTML Transit Container Under E-Tracking System

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kano/Jigawa Area Command, has recorded a significant milestone in transit cargo management with the arrival of its first container from the Ports and Terminal Multiservices Limited (PTML) Terminal under the electronic cargo tracking system.

The container arrived at the Command on Friday, August 14, 2026, after departing the PTML Terminal on August 10, marking the first time the Kano/Jigawa Area Command has received a transit container from the Lagos-based terminal monitored electronically throughout its journey.

The Acting Customs Area Controller of the Command, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Usman Adamu, described the development as an important step in the Service’s transition towards technology-driven cargo monitoring, enhanced security and more efficient transit management.

“This is a particularly important milestone for us because, for the first time in the history of the Command, we are receiving a transit container from the PTML Terminal. This achievement is further strengthened by the deployment of an electronic cargo tracker, which enables real-time monitoring of cargo from the port of landing to its destination,” Adamu said.

He noted that the container completed the journey from the PTML Terminal to Kano in four days, describing the transit as an indication of the effectiveness of the electronic tracking system in providing continuous visibility of consignments in transit.

According to him, the NCS commenced deployment of the electronic cargo tracking system in the third quarter of 2025, with the Kano/Jigawa Area Command receiving 194 containers fitted with the technology during the period.

Adamu explained that the system would enhance cargo security by allowing Customs authorities to monitor consignments throughout their movement from the ports to their final destinations.

He added that the electronic seal fitted to the containers was designed to trigger an alert whenever an unauthorised attempt was made to tamper with or interfere with a consignment.

Also speaking, the Modernisation Project Manager, Zone B, Assistant Comptroller of Customs Ummaru Aliyu, said the electronic cargo tracking system was introduced to replace the traditional manual escort system used in monitoring transit cargo.

Aliyu said the technology would improve accountability, security and operational efficiency while strengthening Customs’ ability to monitor the movement of transit consignments from the mother ports to their destinations.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of Dangwauro Terminal, Mark Onyeama, commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for introducing the electronic tracking technology, describing it as a significant advancement in cargo security and operational efficiency.

Onyeama also acknowledged measures implemented by the Acting Area Controller to streamline transit operations, noting that the reforms had contributed to improved accountability and security at the terminal.

The deployment of electronic cargo tracking is expected to further strengthen the integrity of Nigeria’s transit trade system by reducing reliance on manual monitoring, improving cargo visibility and enhancing Customs’ capacity to detect unauthorised interference with consignments.
