Dosunmu-Ogunbi

A Nigerian-born scholar, Oluwami Dosunmu-Ogunbi, has etched her name in history after becoming the first Black woman to earn a PhD in Robotics Engineering from the University of Michigan, marking a major milestone in a field where representation remains limited.

Her achievement not only highlights academic excellence but also underscores the growing impact of African talent in global science and technology, inspiring a new generation of innovators across the continent and beyond.

Here are things to know about Oluwami Dosunmu-Ogunbi:

1. Background

She is a Nigerian-born scholar and the daughter of Nigerian immigrants, reflecting a strong cultural heritage that has shaped her journey.

Her achievement is a source of pride for both Nigeria and the global African diaspora, showcasing the impact of immigrant families in shaping academic and professional excellence abroad.

2. Dosunmu-Ogunbi strongly believes that success is a collective effort, acknowledging the vital roles played by mentors, teachers, friends, and family in her journey. She is also deeply committed to the idea that engineering should go beyond technical innovation, emphasising social responsibility, inclusivity, and the use of knowledge to solve real-world problems and improve lives.

3. Academic & Professional Contributions

Beyond her research, she has distinguished herself as an active contributor to the robotics community, engaging in initiatives that promote learning and collaboration. Her role as a Robotics outreach ambassador for three consecutive years (2021–2023) highlights her dedication to mentoring younger students and increasing awareness and participation in STEM fields.

4. Awards & Recognition

Her impact has been widely recognised through several honours, including the prestigious MLK Spirit Award, which celebrates her leadership, mentorship, and commitment to inspiring others. She also emerged as a runner-up in the Three-Minute Thesis competition, demonstrating her ability to communicate complex research effectively, and earned induction into the Bouchet Society, a distinguished network that recognises academic excellence and promotes diversity in higher education.

5. Career Progression

As she transitions from doctoral studies, Dosunmu-Ogunbi is interviewing for faculty positions, signalling the next phase of her career in academia. This step positions her to contribute further to research, teaching, and mentorship, potentially shaping the next generation of engineers and innovators.

6. Legacy Goal

While her historic achievement is notable, she aspires to be remembered for more than breaking barriers. Her long-term goal is to use engineering as a tool for positive societal impact, focusing on creating solutions that address real challenges and improve quality of life, while also fostering inclusive and collaborative communities.
